The old west is alive and well in LoDo. Bustling streets, exciting nightlife, rich culture and plenty of pedestrian friendly hotspots continue to define Denver’s lower downtown as a must-see attraction. Visitors are reminded of LoDo’s storied past as one of Colorado’s wildest boomtowns while at the same time popping in on exciting new entertainment, dining and shopping opportunities. Some of these new attractions are even located in renovated saloons and saddleries dating back over a 100 years for an even more authentic feel.

LoDo Clocktower in the Denver Historic DistrictA twenty block area nestled neatly between Coors Field and the Pepsi Center, LoDo is the perfect spot for hanging out with friends after a Rockies, Nuggets or Avalanche game or simply enjoying the funky clubs, unique art studios, historic hotels and appetizing menus of more than 100 eateries, from fast food to fine dining. Bounded by 20th Street, Larimer Street, Cherry Creek and the Platte River, LoDo is the original heart of Denver following the city’s connection to the Trans Continental Railroad in 1870. While the miners may be gone, the legacy of Denver’s glory days can be seen throughout the historic district.

Union Station - Denver, ColoradoUnion Station is the perfect place to start, considering its rich LoDo history. Located at Wynkoop and 17th Streets, this 1880’s example of Beaux-Arts design once welcomed 1,000,000 passengers a year. Now home to Amtrak, the Regional Transportation District’s Light Rail and the Ski Train, Denver’s Union Station continues its western story with an extensive railroad museum display including numerous Pullman artifacts and period railroad china, providing hours of entertainment for train and history lovers alike. Don’t forget to visit the basement, where model displays of some of the country’s most famous rail lines operate daily from 8 AM to 8 PM. The depot itself is open from 6:30 AM to 2 AM and admission is free.

The Temporary Contemporary, home to the Museum of Contemporary Art is located at 1840 15th Street. Across the street from their new site under construction, the Temporary Contemporary offers visitors the latest art in a friendly, intimate environment. Admission for non-members is $5. In LoDo on a weekend? Stop by the museum for their penny Saturdays. Admission is just 1 cent.

The Oxford Hotel, the grand dame of LoDo’s architectural gems, remains as beautiful today as the day she opened in 1891. Visitors should not be fooled by her exterior understated elegance. Inside the Oxford is opulent and luxurious, welcoming guests to deluxe rooms filled with European antiques, lush carpets and the finest linens. The hotel houses McCormick’s Fish House, one of Denver’s finest seafood restaurants and is the site of the famous Cruise Room, a 1933 art deco bar patterned after one of the lounges on the Queen Mary. Whether in town for just the day or staying for a longer visit, stop by the Oxford Hotel for a look back at the days of Denver’s ladies and gentlemen. Brown Mercantile building at the corner of 18th and Wynkoop Streets is known for its raucous crowds and delicious menu options. Named after the territory’s first Sheriff, Wynkoop’s offers full lunch and dinner menus including local favorites cut elk medallions and beer braised pot roast. Wynkoop Billiards is located on the second floor of the historic building. This elegant pool hall is open to the public with 22 tables, two private pool rooms, dart boards and the same great bar menu available in the restaurant. The LoDo also features upscale chain P.F. Chang’s, the sports-themed Sports Column (try their Ultimate Nachos), local favorites LoDo’s Bar and Grill and 9th Door, as well as numerous steakhouses and coffee bars. Among the best for the beef crowd are The Keg and Morton’s. Coffee aficionados will find Common Grounds on 17th Street the perfect pick up for their LoDo day trip.

In LoDo for just the afternoon? Don’t forget to stop by Gelazzi Gelato Italiano Café at 1411 Larimer Street for a refreshing gelato dessert in a fresh baked cone or cup. Their cool iced confections range from standard orange and mint varieties to their exotic gelato cocktails, including the Gelazzi Margarita and the decadent Laguna Blu, made from pineapple gelato and Bacardi Rum. With a full dessert menu, Gellazi’s is the perfect rest stop for everyone in your group.

Entertainment in LoDo.

In the mood for live entertainment? Wynkoop Brewing Company is also the home of the Impulse Theater, Denver’s longest running show. Found in the basement of the Wynkoop, this hilarious interactive mix of comedy and theater plays to sold out crowds Thursdays through Saturdays. Contact the theater directly at 303-297-2111.

Jazz lovers will find the sounds of El Chapultepec music to their ears. An unassuming building at 1962 Market Street, El Chap has been seen Ella Fitzgerald, the Marsalis brothers, Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett throughout the years, sometimes on stage, sometimes just hanging out. Always crowded, the restaurant serves basic Mexican food mixed with the best blues and jazz outside of New Orleans. Limousines park next to SUV’s in this casual, yet electrifying hotspot.
